Everyone at West Ham United has been deeply saddened to learn of the passing of 1958 promotion winner Vic Keeble at age of 87.
The prolific centre forward scored 51 goals in just 84 senior appearances in Claret and Blue, including 19 in the Hammers’ 1957/58 Second Division title-clinching season.
A powerful, robust striker with a hard shot and dominant aerial ability, Essex-born Keeble played for Arsenal, hometown club Colchester United and Newcastle United, where he won the FA Cup in 1955, before joining West Ham for £10,000 in October 1957.
The new boy announced his arrival in style, scoring on his debut at home to Doncaster Rovers before bagging a hat-trick in a 5-0 thrashing of Stoke City at the Boleyn ground on just his fifth appearance for the Club.
Another treble followed in an FA Cup third-round thumping of Blackpool and, by the end of his first season in east London, Keeble had netted 24 goals in just 33 games.
The most important of those came at Middlesbrough on the final day of the 1957/58 campaign, when he netted the third goal in West Ham’s title-clinching 3-1 Second Division victory at Ayresome Park.
Having been promoted to the First Division, the rise in standard held no fears for Keeble, who marked his first top-flight appearance for the Hammers with a goal in a 2-1 victory at Portsmouth in August 1958.
And they continued to flow as Ted Fenton’s side finished sixth in the top flight, with the centre forward netting 21 times.
For much of his West Ham career, Keeble shared the forward line with Scotsman John Dick, with the pair combining to score 101 goals between October 1957 and May 1959.
A back injury forced him into retirement at the age of 30, with Keeble’s final appearance for the Club coming in a First Division fixture at Leeds United on 16 January 1960.
Having hung up his boots, he moved home to north Essex and returned to Colchester United to serve as commercial manager and later worked as an administrator at Chelmsford City.
Keeble also visited West Ham regularly, most recently attending a Premier League fixture with Hull City at the Boleyn Ground in February 2010.
The thoughts of everyone at the Club are with Vic’s loved ones at this sad time.

Before my time but Dad, God bless him, spoke very highly and he saw a few from Vic through to Ashton
Makes me feel old, when I was a rear gunner in a pram I remember tales from the oldun's of bunking in to the 23 cup final and how the flying winger we had was negated by the crowd, Jimmy Ruffell?

Keeble and Dick were the two up top who got us promoted. Saw them play as my first games were as a six year old in 1957.As a previous poster said, they took no shit from any oppo player. John Dick scared you by looking at you.
Great memories, unlike today’s news etc.

easthammer - the first time?
We got promoted in 1923, even if getting to the Cup Final was the thing everyone remembers about that year.
Our highest place was sixth before we got relegated nine years later.
So not a totally shit period to be erased from our history

When it comes to one player as a boy I missed see play but wished I had its Vic Keeble. He is credited with getting West Ham out of the second division with his goal contribution along with John Dick - who I did have the privilege of seeing play. My father told me a story of a home game where Keeble noticed that the opposition Goalkeeper was a poor kicker. The story goes that Keeble basically waited for the Keeper to kick the ball at the edge of his goal area - Vic puts his foot up and the ball hits Keebles boot and rebounds into the Goal. Any olden's on here remember this or actually saw that game. I suppose these days hardly a big deal but my old man really rated Vic Keeble - RIP

An Essex Boy - Colchester to Newcastle to West Ham
His goals got us up into the top division for the first time in1958.
Scored 50 plus goals in 80 odd games for us. Could do with that now.

Played football with his son, James. If Vic was half the man he was a top bloke. Absolute goals/games ratio.

Was one of our best ever forwards in terms of goals. In the top group with the likes of Hurst, Byrne, Robson, Cottee, Cross etc...

RIP Vic and our west ham families thoughts to his family.
Weird that because we know how long ago they were playing, we're naive enough to think they will have already passed.
Keeble and Watson, a couple of prolific Vic's the hammers have had.

I worked with John Dick’s twin daughters as a Saturday boy at Woolworths in the early to mid 70’s.
They looked very much like him as well.

Sad news can just about remember him as I was only ten at the time.
My old fella used to go on about how he wouldn't take any nonsense from anyone.
